PFAS Update following September ECHA Committee Meetings

The September 2024 meetings of the Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) and the Socio-Economic Analysis Committee (SEAC) of the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) focused on evaluating the EU-wide proposal to restrict per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) across several sectors, concluding discussions for the petroleum and mining sectors while deferring those for textiles, upholstery, leather, apparel, carpets, and food contact materials and packaging to later meetings.

A revised approach for calculating PFAS emissions, emphasising the waste stage and distinguishing between solid particle emissions and those that leach from materials was adopted. The sectors they will evaluate at the November committee meetings will be applications of fluorinated gases; transport; and energy.

The Committees are evaluating the proposal to restrict PFAS in the EU/EEA alongside comments received during the six-month consultation. National authorities of Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden are updating their initial report to address the feedback from the consultation. The updated report, called a Background Document, will be evaluated by the committees and form the basis for their opinions.
