European Parliament Votes to Postpone EUDR
Posted on Nov 20, 2024On 14 November, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) approved a one-year postponement of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) compliance deadlines, along with amendments that have raised concern amongst tyre and natural rubber suppliers.
The postponement, passed by 371 votes to 240, was proposed by the EU Commission in response to challenges highlighted by member states, non-EU countries, traders, and operators regarding the feasibility of meeting the original end-2024 deadline. Under the new timeline, large operators and traders must comply with EUDR certification requirements by 30 December 2025, while micro- and small enterprises have until 30 June 2026.
The European Parliament also adopted amendments to the EUDR including the addition of a ‘no risk’ category to the existing deforestation risk classifications of ‘low, ‘standard’, and ‘high’. This proposal has drawn criticism from tyre manufacturers and the natural rubber supply chain.
The proposed changes must receive endorsement from both the Council and European Parliament before becoming law and published in the EU Official Journal.
