All About Foam – read about our visit to Kewell Converters

Members of the UK Gasket & Sealing Association (UKGSA), recently visited fellow Member, Kewell Converters in Kent to explore their production facility and gain insights into their operations.

Kewell history

Established in 1971 by Colin Kewell, the company’s origins are intriguing. Initially intending to sell a machine designed for processing materials into extruders, Colin unexpectedly received an order to supply the material. Kewell Converters has grown from its humble base in Redhill to now occupying a 35,000 sq ft site in Edenbridge housing their offices, factory and stores.

Remaining a family-run business, Kewell Converters is now managed by Colin’s sons, Nick and Marcos (Joint Managing Directors). With a workforce of 36 employees, many hailing from the same families, there is a strong family ethos.

Kewell Converters specialise in providing tailored manufacturing solutions to its diverse customer-base, utilising CAD/CAM to create design solutions. Catering to various sectors, including TV and film, their showroom showcases samples of the products they have made.

Polyethylene foam

Their core business is polyethylene foam, with Zotefoam materials sourced directly from the manufacturer in Croydon. The company prioritises in-house production, utilising an array of cutting-edge machinery such as tubing and cording machines, laminators, presses, contour cutters, waterjet machines, and routers. The third generation of Colin’s original machine is still in use for adding cord to extruders.

During the private tour, Members witnessed first-hand the efficiency of the machinery in action. The company actively promotes recycling practices to limit waste destined for landfill. Even the cut top layer of raw material serves a purpose as a by-product sold to customers as packaging material.

The visit concluded with a delightful touch – lunch from a pizza van and personalised leaving gifts crafted from foam, showcasing the company’s creativity and attention to detail.

Simon Winfield, Chair of the UKGSA, commended Kewell Converters for their exemplary engineering and design prowess showcased during the tour. The enthusiasm and engagement of all staff in making sure questions were answered was a testament to how well the company is operated, from top to bottom.

Thanks were extended to Nick Kewell, Neil Johnston, Scot Mackay and Andrea Deans for hosting a highly informative and enjoyable event, leaving a lasting impression on UKGSA members.
