GCA Golf Day and Dinner 2014 - Forest Pines Hotel & Golf Resort
Thursday, 26th June 2014
The name gives it away……..
Forest, Pines and Beeches…. The 3 loops of nine at the wonderful Forest Pines resort near Scunthorpe.
This venue came highly recommended by my Golf Professional and Director of Golf so became my choice for this year, and what a superb course it proved to be.
Following the committee meeting, guests who hadn’t stopped over the night before started to arrive and following my absence last year it was great to see familiar faces again.
Coffee and bacon rolls were served, then the Chairman, Keith Shepherd gave his welcoming speech and explained the rules for the day and Scott Mackay from SJG provided everyone with a fabulous gift pack.
Next came the “Champagne Putting Challenge” which showed everyone the difficulty of the greens we were about to negotiate. Well done to Simon Winfield from Maclellan Rubber for winning with a stunning putt.
Daunting was the view from the first tee on the Forest loop as the pine trees lined the fairway making the tee shot look intimidating but in fairness the fairway was plenty wide enough, although Greg Ansell did decide to take the safe option and lay up to stay short of any trouble.
Greg isn’t a regular golfer but his “Hole in One” on the 4th for a 5 made his day.
The format for the day was best individual and best 2 from 4 counting towards the team event.
For the 3 balls we selected a “Ghost” player who was our sole lady golfer, Jenny West. I’m glad we selected her as our score improved by several points to what I thought was a reasonable 71, how wrong I was!
With the sun beating down, tiredness started to set in with some, but as we approached the most accurate drive hole, the 9th, Keith Shepherd suddenly had an adrenalin rush and boomed his drive 250 yards straight down the middle, coming to rest no more than 3 feet from the line. Well done Keith.
At the turn we had an excellent lunch provided and we were able to take a well-earned rest in the shade. We then moved onto the Beeches loop and like the Forest, the course and greens were in superb condition.
With our team being down to 2 players, Greg’s knee had gone; we battled on for every possible point we could get….. Then we got to the bar…….
Here we found Debbie, Jill, Keith and Paul quietly sipping wine in the glorious sunshine so we decided to have a beer.
As the golfers returned there were a lot of nervous looking people as rumour had it that there was a “Wooden Spoon” prize.
Tales of putts that lipped out, drives that took a bad bounce and approach shots that span too much were shared and more beer was consumed.
We gathered in the dining room for a fantastic meal followed by the prize presentation.
Forest Pines is a truly wonderful golf course and a great hotel. I would recommend it to anyone. It was nice to see friends which I hadn’t seen for a couple of years, and great to hear the banter.
Let’s see what we can come up with for next year.
