GCA Race Day at Worcester Racecourse 2013

10th October 2013

Worcester Race Track was the lovely setting for the GCA’s “Ladies Race Day”.

The event started with a Champagne reception followed by the Annual General Meeting chaired by Sandy McEwan in the absence of GCA’s Chairman Keith Shepherd who unfortunately, due to business commitments in the Middle East, was unable to attend at the last moment.  Sandy summarised the past year’s events covering:  The exciting Aston Martin Factory visit, the extraordinary golf event at The Belfry and, of course, the Ladies Race Day.

Paul Neale from the GCA secretariat gave a brief overview of the accounts for the year ending 31st October 2013.

At the meeting a new committee member Angela Ansell (Corseal) was proposed and seconded and voted onto the committee.  (More news on Angela appears later in this issue).

The AGM was followed by a very tasty sit down meal with lots of bottles of wine and everyone enjoying good conversation with old and new friends.

Roger, the course tipster, gave us his “expert” advice on which horses would do well and which would be left at the starting line.  After messing up putting on my bets, (asked for £10 each way thinking that would be £10 not £20 which the nice lady taking the bets sorted out for me) for the first time in three years I actually managed to make a profit of £1.25 on the day with Roger’s help.

Our box overlooked the whole course and was next to the winning post giving a great view from the balcony of the horses and riders thundering across the line.  The weather was extremely good to us, being chilly but sunny.

The highlight of the afternoon was the race sponsored by Garlock.  Thank you to Darren and Gillian Mortiboy who invited me to the parade ring where they chose the best turned out horse and presented the groom with the prize money.  We were then taken for yet more champagne. After the race Darren presented the prizes to the owner and jockey of the winning horse.

After an afternoon of excellent company, good food, lots of drink, and great racing we finished at 5.30pm.  A great time was had by all with a good mixture of networking and entertainment.  I hope to see everyone again at the next GCA event.
