GCA Race Day at Worcester Racecourse
Thursday 6th October 2011
Worcester Racecourse Ltd. Pitchcroft, Worcester WR1 3EJ
The Ladies Race Day, brought back into the GCA calendar of events by popular demand (and in no small part insistence by the ladies!) was held this year at Worcester Racecourse on the 6th October 2011. This is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located in the beautiful city of Worcester, by the side of the River Severn, and whilst it may be one of the smaller courses the GCA have attended it is beautifully proportioned.
The day was bright but cool and somewhat bracing but fortunately dry. Members and their guests assembled at the Fownes Hotel.
After coffee everyone went to the racecourse by taxi to be in good time for the 12 o’clock start. Unfortunately a ‘jobsworth’ who was on duty refused to let anybody into the course until 12:00 as “rules is rules”. After waiting for about 20 minutes or so we were eventually allowed to enter the racecourse and went to our marquee which was conveniently situated overlooking the parade ring and racecourse.
The event started with a champagne reception followed by the Annual General Meeting chaired by Max Rowland. Unfortunately he was up against stiff competition from the adjoining marquee where Virgin Media (or the screaming Virgins as they were described by some members) were holding their own event. The AGM was followed by a sit down buffet meal with wine which included “The Paddock” Shiraz followed by coffee.
During the meal the course tipster came in and proceeded to tell everyone about the runners and riders and how best to pick the losers. After the second race, members were invited to the parade ring so that they could look over the fillies ...and the horses! There was an open bar in the marquee where those who didn’t like the fresh air could watch all the proceedings on CCTV and place their bets on the conveniently situated tote station. The open bar provided lots of sustenance during the afternoon and the day was declared a great success by all who attended.
The day ended at 5:30 where those who were staying went back to the hotel. Later that evening those of a stronger constitution assembled at The Kings Head, a local pub for an evening meal with networking and discussion of the days events.
The day was once again considered a great success and all agreed that the event should be repeated in 2012, so watch your inbox for details of the 2012 event.
