Golf Day and Dinner 2013

4th July 2013

This year’s prestigious Golf Day and Dinner event was staged at the equally prestigious Belfry Golf Centre in Wishaw, Warwickshire.

Brimming with history and heritage, but combined with modern comforts, this former old manor house dates back to the 12th century.

The Belfry is a 324 bedroom resort, but unfortunately due to technical difficulties or so I'm told, none

of those attending were able to sample the delights of these luxurious bedrooms, but probably the less said about this the better, all I will say is “cheers Sir Alex”.

The resort is set within 550 acres of beautiful English countryside, with a superb range of facilities.

The Belfry is recognised for its rich history and past, and is renowned for being the golfing Mecca, allowing golfers to walk in the footsteps of their Ryder Cup Legends, such as Jack Nicklaus, Colin Montgomerie and Tiger Woods.  With its 3 Golf courses offering different golfing experiences, world famous holes and exhilarating views, it was therefore the perfect place to stage this year’s event.

The Brabazon course is the main tournament course, and the others include the PGA National and the Derby.  It was to be the latter, The Derby Course, that would put our golfers to the test, me included, although I use the term golfer loosely when referring to myself.

The Derby course was designed by Dave Thomas and Peter Alliss, it is a Par70, 6099 yards, which is 254 yards shorter than the Brabazon  Tournament course, but never the less still a very tough and demanding course, speaking from my own experience of the day, the greens were very fast indeed.

Despite forecasts for unsettled weather, the day remained dry, warm and plenty of sunny spells, which resulted in a touch of sun burn to my nose and forearms, I must remember to pack the sun screen next time.

The evening meal was excellent with great service from the staff, probably trying to make a amends for the cock up over the bedrooms, oops I said I wouldn’t mention that again, sorry.

The evening was well attended by members and guests; it was great to see familiar faces and also to meet new people.
We concluded with a Charity Prize Raffle, hosted by Paul Gregory of Garlock, followed then by the Golf Prizes presented by our very own one and only GCA Chairmen, Mr Keith Shepherd.
